Why am I taking the Flats Challenge

by - May 14, 2018

I’m participating in the Flats and Handwashing Challenge hosted by Cloth Diaper Revival.

I’m participating in the Challenge to spread awareness of the accessibility of cloth for everyone and to remind myself of how privileged I am to have the stash that I’ve got. Handwashing was something that sounded extremely overwhelming in the beginning, and if I had been without a washer before beginning cloth diapers it’s safe to say I never would have started with them. Since beginning to hand wash I’ve realized how easy it actually can be, and I believe this knowledge could really lower diaper need.

This is my first time participating in the challenge. My daughter will be 2 later this month, so she was a little too late for the challenge in 2016, and last year I just couldn’t bring myself to commit because I thought it seemed too hard. Last fall we ended up moving into an apartment that only offers a community laundry room with coin operated machines, so I started hand washing. Now the challenge is basically my every day with a few more restrictions.

Since this is something so close to what I do every day, I’m using this week as an opportunity to really focus on how minimal cloth diapering can be. I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to build a stash of far more diapers than I need. If I don’t feel like doing diaper laundry for a day or two (or 7…) it’s not a big deal. I’ve got more than enough to get me through.
For many families that are facing diaper need that’s not something achievable, and I’m using this opportunity to really think about what would be feasible for me if I was starting all over now.
